Commonly Asked Questions

These are a few of the commonly asked questions on the roles. Please visit Seven Roles for more role information or Lumiere Sciences for help with training and coaching.

Are Roles and Personalities the Same Thing?

No! Roles are behavioral actions that you choose to use. Personalities are who you are. Personality tests and types are like a house that you live in all the time. Roles are the car that takes you where you want to be.

You can choose to move quickly or safely. You choose which direction you want to go in. The roles offer a mindset or a set of actions that can help you get to where you want to be.

How Do I Change? (I am who I am!)

Are you? Consider how different you are than you were five years ago. You have many of the same preferences, character qualities and relational styles that are part of your personality but consider how many different skills you have now than you did even a year ago!

We all change to adjust to new circumstances. It is one of the most amazing facets of being alive.

The real question is not can we change, the better question is how and what to change. This is the growth strategy that we want for our whole lives.

The Seven Roles framework offers a growth template that is personalized to your needs. Grow your weaker roles or strengthen your stronger roles. Either way, grow in the. direction you want to achieve your goals.

Using Roles in Difficult Places

Resilience is the ability to adapt well in the face of challenges. The goal is to navigate change with confidence, competence and direction.

But change is now a constant current in our lives and navigating feels more like staying afloat.

The Seven Roles offers help through awareness of your stronger roles which are what you lean into during periods of upheaval. Or. They are the roles that are not helping you and it would be better to change roles!

We all use the roles we are most comfortable with. What if those are not the roles that would best address your current situation?

Knowing and growing the roles that offer you the most flexibility, insight and actions can increase your ability to ride out the chaos.

Role Fit and Exhaustion

Role Theory has been around for a century. It has been used to address how we define 'normal', what are acceptable behaviors for a given position and how we engage with each other.

More recently, it has been found to be more useful in team interactions; how does a group of people maximize their abilities, together? The opposite question is equally important, how does a group of people minimize their abilities and burnout?

When we work against our abilities, it requires a great deal of effort. We can do it but only for so long. Burnout is the wall we hit when we can't keep doing what we are doing.

Your Roleset will change over time, that is the goal. But your favorite roles will always be easier to play than your newer roles. If you play your weaker roles without recovering, it will increase your burnout time.
